5th Grade - Outdoor Education
Students in the 5th grade have the opportunity to participate in a week-long residential nature study program at the Y.M.C.A.'s Camp Jones Gulch. Jones Gulch, nestled in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, has been home to San Mateo Outdoor Education for more than 35 years. It is a weeklong residential program for fifth graders focusing on experiential and environmental education.
During Outdoor Education, students will learn about the natural world, explore the forest and beach ecosystems and work together as a community. The Site Director and fifteen naturalists lead the educational activities; high school students serve as cabin leaders; and the 5th grade teaching team participates as well.
Details regarding program goals, as well as practical information including menus, packing suggestions and dealing with homesickness can be found at the San Mateo County Office of Education website.
Parents are asked to make a donation of $275.00 to cover the cost of their child's participation. Payment of $275.00 is due by Friday, December 13, 2013. Please make checks payable to Menlo Park City School District and send to school with your child. Scholarships are available through the PTO. Please contact Joan von der Linden, Vice Principal, if you would like to request a scholarship. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 650 326-5164 x1901. The PTO will support the cost of buses for this event.
